Preserve

Preserves are refuges where magical creatures dwell. They are run by mortal caretakers who keep everything in order as best they can. There are currently 38 active preserves and 34 fallen ones.

Magical boundaries are in place to prevent some creatures from going to places outside their territory. This is both for the safety of other creatures and the caretaker. The gates of these Preserves are usually hidden from most mortals by distracter spells.

At the start of the series, there are 42 active preserves (including the five secret preserves), and 30 fallen ones.

Rise of the Evening Star

Grandpa tells Kendra and Seth that Maddox went to perform reconnaissance in the recently fallen Rio Branco preserve in Brazil.

Grip of the Shadow Plague

After stopping the Shadow Plague, the Fablehaven Knights were informed by Dougan that Lost Mesa also fell. This was accomplished by Navarog and Mr. Lich.

Keys to the Demon Prison

Shortly after the Knights' arrival to retrieve the Translocator in Australia, Obsidian Waste fell. After the Battle of Zzyzx, Fablehaven was later restored by Agad and the Dragons of Wyrmroost, who possibly also restored other fallen preserves, though that has not yet been confirmed.
